What to expect from Valle Isarco

Valle Isarco, or in German, Eisacktal, is known for its zesty, dry, and fresh white wines. As it lies further into the mountains, and many of the vineyards are planted at altitude, this is the coolest part of Alto Adige.

Due to the higher altitudes and the cool air coming directly from the Alps, this is where you’ll find some of the freshest, and most aromatic examples of white wines in Alto Adige.

Head here for Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Grigio. You’ll also be surprised to find more Germanic varieties that do well in the cool Alpine air, such as Kerner, Sylvaner, Grüner Veltiner, and Müller-Thurgau.

The quality of the wines in Valley Isarco is really impressive, so if you’re not sure about what to pick, go ahead and try something new - you won’t be disappointed!

Did you know?

Near the town of Chiusa, there’s an old monastery called Sabiona Abbey. Perched on a rocky outcrop above the town, it has a walled vineyard (a clos) inside the cloistered abbey. The nuns inside don’t interact with the outside world, but the grapes are harvested each fall and sold to the local cooperative. It’s a place with a living history going back hundreds of years!

Abbazia di Novacella, also a monastery, is one of the oldest active wineries in the whole world - producing wines since 1142!
