The Abbazia di Novacella winery is among the oldest active wineries in the world. At its founding, Abbazia di Novacella was lavishly provided with farms and land, among which were also vineyards, by Reginbert of Säben. As early as in 1177, Pope Alexander III. confirmed the Monastery’s ownership of vineyards in the vicinity. Over the course of the centuries, the Abbey acquired a respectable ownership in vineyards by means of gifts, donations, purchases, and exchanges. To this very day, the Abbey is surrounded by terraced vineyards. They extend from the monastic complex, which is located at an altitude of 600 m (2,000 ft.), up the steep hills to an elevation of 900 m (2,950 ft.). Since the temporary dissolution of the Abbey at the beginning of the nineteenth century, not all of them have remained in the Abbey’s possession. But to this day, most of the local farmers deliver their grapes to the Monastery, where they are turned into wines with a strong character in the Abbazia winery.

As proven by archeological finds, viticulture has been practiced on the protected slopes of the Isarco Valley for more than 2,500 years. The efforts expended for creating the vineyards are documented to this day by the many dry-stack walls that structure the slopes into terraces, thus reducing their steepness.

Celeistion studied viticulture and oenology in San Michele. Starting his career in the mid 1980s at Cantina Colterenzio and working his way up to head winemaker from 1990-1997. He then served as head winemaker for Elena Walch from 1997 through 1998. After a short period there, he joined Abbazia di Novacella as head winemaker, where he has continued to create incredible wines since. This is also where he was recognized and awarded with Gambero Rosso Winemaker of the year in 2009.

Hora honors Sylvaner with some ageing. Fermentation done with Skin contact and aged in wood, this wine has evolved into a spectrum of very interesting aromas. The result is a Sylvaner in sensory overload specifically adaptable to many gastronomic combinations.

Quota is a wine that explores the limits of a typical grape hailing from Alto Adige. Pinot Bianco has now been introduced in our northern most zone as a result of climatic changes. This wine is an experiment resulting in a moderate level of alcohol, vibrant acidity, fresh aromas.

Ohm, a name referring to resistence, represents our first experience with vines that withstand the warmer temperatures of Oltradige. Made from the Bronner grape varietal, picked during late harvest, thrives in these climatic conditions. 

A full-bodied, elegant white wine. Yellowish-green to straw yellow in color. A soft scent of honey, pears, and bananas. Powerful and nutty on the palate with a balanced finish.
